Every clerk at every market I have seen here has a chair. American store
workers should be envious of these German clerks who get to sit all day
instead of standing for hours.
I'm not 100% sure right now, but that clerks have chairs might be part of health and safety measures which are enforced by law, somtimes by german laws, sometime by EU wide laws. As said, I'm not 100% sure, but iz is likely.
you are right. eu laws. also none of clerks sit the whole shift there. they are replaced in few hours by other clerks and do work in harder positions like cleaning, sorting out and bringing the stuff into the shop.
I heard in the US clerks pack your stuff into bags for you. This doesn't happen in Germany (at least not in supermarkets/discounters). In shops where they do pack your stuff in bags, the clerks normally stand. It's uncomfortable to pack a bag while sitting.

DeleteI sometimes do 7,5 hours shifts (30 minutes break) at the tills - makes your back hurt like a bitch, I prefer the "harder" work in the store ;)
